The 2015 Pan Am Games, also known as TO2015, is a major international multi-sport event, to be held in the GTA, Hamilton, and Niagara in July. Although the focus of the games will be on Toronto, rowing, kayaking, and canoeing, are being hosted in the Niagara Region and the games have already begun to have a positive impact on the local economy. Infrastructure from the Federal Government has assisted in improving the water sport venues in both St. Catharines and Welland.

Improving sport venues in Niagara

A new state-of-the-art facility in Welland will host kayaking and canoeing, while St. Catharines will host rowing at the world class Henley Rowing Course.

The Welland International Flatwater Centre

$10-million facility completed in 2013.

Eight kilometres of deep, placid water.

Permanent seating for 570 and temporary seating for 750.

The Federal Government has provided $4.1 million in support.

The City of Welland has had to contribute $5,063,700 ($3.2 in construction plus $1,863,700 in ancillary costs).

TO2015 widened a section of the canal to meet international competition standards and built: a timing tower, an athlete centre, new plaza, and a start tower.

There is also a state-of-the-art multi-sport training tank installed in the new athlete centre.

Significant infrastructure improvements were not as extensive as the Welland International Flatwater Centre, as St. Catharines had previously undergone improvements when hosting the 1999 World Rowing Championships.

Modifications include: replacement of the narrow Henley Island Bridge, new Albano lane-marking system, and modifications to the grandstand’s concrete front pad.

Estimated budget of $820,000 and the City of St. Catharines contributed $364,000.

An impact on Niagara’s economy

Whether it’s showcasing Niagara on the world stage, the creation of jobs through infrastructure construction, capitalizing on the new visitors coming into the area, or the economic spin offs from housing, feeding, and entertaining the 400 athletes from around the world expected to arrive in Niagara, there is no doubt that the Pan Am Games will be a boost for Niagara.
